“Cumbia is the New Punk”—with the title of one of their songs, the Gama brothers from Naucalpan, a suburb of Mexico City, sum up their music perfectly.
But let’s rewind for a moment: although they grew up in a traditional marimba family, the brothers turned their backs on the instrument in their teenage years—out of juvenile embarrassment. This was despite—or perhaps because of—having played it since childhood alongside their father at weddings, birthdays and every kind of community celebration. Instead, they gravitated toward Western guitar music: punk, psychobilly and garage rock above all.
Eventually, they returned to the marimba, bringing with them the raw, unrestrained energy of their guitar-driven youth. Since 2019, under the name Son Rompe Pera, they’ve fused these seemingly incompatible worlds—and Colombian cumbia—into one. The result is a wild, high-voltage mix that’s downright lethally danceable.
But this blend of traditional Latin American music and alternative underground sound only reaches its full intensity on stage. Don’t believe it? See for yourself on Saturday—the brothers will be taking over the main stage with their band, possibly triggering the very first marimba-induced mosh pit on the Güsche 🤘
