He started out as a rapper, but today he blends pop with a dash of punk, dance, and schlager. He indulges in excess, but also embraces melancholy. They say he despises his hometown of Vienna—and yet he loves it with a deep intensity. He’s often compared to Falco (much to his dismay), though there’s also something of Yung Hurn in him. His music pairs just as well with champagne as it does with beer. Franz Bibiza—or simply, and loudly, BIBIZA, as he calls himself—is many things, but one thing he definitely isn’t: easy to pin down. With his lyrics, the twentysomething from Austria’s capital strikes a chord with his generation. Last year, he won two Amadeus Austrian Music Awards for his debut album Wiener Schickeria. “Those who stagger get more out of the journey,” he sings—not as a flirty line, but as a statement. Now BIBIZA takes to our main stage with his four-piece band. And together, we all stagger with him.
