Depth. If you had to describe $oho Bani’s work with just one word, that would probably be it. When the German rapper shares personal experiences and reflects on society’s issues in his songs, he never just scratches the surface. And he always has his finger on the pulse of the time. The native Berliner never seems to miss what will be hot next. His beats sometimes sound like indie, sometimes like house. At times, they remind you of punk, and sometimes he raps over breakbeats. And then there’s the fact that he took an old Herbert Grönemeyer anthem and turned it into a mega hit: “ZEIT, DASS SICH WAS DREHT” is a reinterpretation of Grönemeyer’s song of the same name, which he released in 2006 for the football World Cup. Despite all these experiments, $oho Bani’s heart belongs to hip-hop – and he shows just how much potential still lies in this genre today.
